Terminally ill man in Ohio attends daughter's wedding via gurney

Family and friends begin to clap as Bride Sarah Nagy holds her father's hand as they wait for Reverend Charles Knerem to begin her wedding ceremony on Oct. 12, in Strongsville, Ohio.

By Simon Moya-Smith, Staff Writer, NBC News

A terminally ill man from Ohio was able to give his daughter away at her wedding Saturday — with the assistance of an all-volunteer hospital caravan.

Lying in a gurney and connected to a portable ventilator and heart monitor, Scott Nagy, 56, who suffers from metastatic urethral cancer, was transported by ambulance from University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland to First Lutheran Church in Strongsville, nurse practitioner Jacky Uljanic, who helped organize the event, told NBC News.

"The planning had to be pretty strategic," she said. "It took probably about three weeks to get everything together."

Uljanic said two paramedics had volunteered their time as well as their ambulance to take Nagy to the wedding. Other volunteers included a nurse, an additional nurse practitioner and a doctor who followed the ambulance to the church.

"When we walked in with him at the church there were tissues to faces," she said. "The entire congregation started clapping."

Uljanic said Nagy was able to stay for the entire wedding and even had a little extra time after to pose with family and friends in the church parking lot.

Janice Guhl, director of media and public relations with University Hospital Seidman Cancer Center, lauded the staff for their willingness to volunteer.

"The nurses really rallied and were able to take him to the church," she told NBC News.

Alicia Reale, media relations manager with Seidman, said the nurses even had scheduled a barber to visit the hospital to groom Nagy's beard and cut his hair.

Scott Nagy's wife Jean pins the corsage to her husband's jacket before the start of their daughter's wedding ceremony at First Lutheran Church in Strongsville, Ohio, on Oct. 12. University Hospital sent a medical team along with Scott who is bound to his bed. The ambulance ride to the church was donated by Physicians Medical Transport.

“I think it went so far as they helped to get sheets for his gurney that would match the wedding colors," Reale said.

Nagy, who was first diagnosed with the deadly disease last November, has been at Seidman's intensive care unit since August and has undergone chemotherapy, Uljanic said.

Scott’s wife, Jean, told NBC News that she was sharing texts with her husband before he arrived at the church and that she was grateful for the efforts of the volunteer hospital personnel.

“I was just teary eyed most of the day,” she said.

Jean added that the family had rented a big screen and a projector so that her husband could give the ceremonial toast from his hospital room.

She said his toast included well wishes to the newlyweds as well as an encouragement to the wedding revelers.

“He wanted to make sure everyone had enough to drink and enough to eat and dance as much as they could – to have a good time,” Jean said.

Uljanic said it was Nagy's goal to survive long enough to attend his daughter's wedding, which was originally scheduled for next year, but moved up in March, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

"He was very thankful we could make this happen for him," she said.

Looking Back at the Red Bull Stratos Jump

Image: Red Bull Stratos

It’s been a year since Felix Baumgartner jumped out of a balloon at the edge of space. To celebrate, Red Bull and RDIO will host a new documentary Mission to the Edge of Space: The Inside Story of Red Bull Stratos. The event will can be viewed for free on October 14 at 12 PM EDT at http://www.rdio.com/redbullstratos.

I still think that this is one of my favorite physics problems. Why? Why not. First, it’s just a cool event. But other than that, the physics is both simple and complicated at the same time. The simple part is that there are essentially only two forces acting on Felix as he falls to the ground. There is the air resistance force and the gravitational force. The complicated part of this problem is the fact that the air resistance force depends on both the density of air and the speed of the jumper. Really the only way to model the motion in this case is to create a numerical calculation with a computer.

I’ve looked at many different aspects of this Red Bull Stratos jump. Here are a few of my favorite posts on the subject.

Kim Kardashian Looks Glam, Slim, Brings North West to Support Kanye West at Jimmy Kimmel Taping

Supportive -- and very sexy -- baby mama! Kim Kardashian was happy to play a quiet, secondary role in Hollywood on Wednesday -- bringing covered-up baby daughter North West, 4 months, to the studios where love Kanye West faced off with Jimmy Kimmel on the comedian's titular late night show. Although mum, the reality star, 32, made a big statement in a tight, blue v-neck dress that showed off her impressively toned post-baby curves, which she paired with tan thigh-high boots and a navy coat; Kardashian's dyed-blonde locks looked more flattering and glamorous than ever.

West, 36, surely appreciate his two favorite ladies on the planet as he and Kimmel, 45, officially ended their Twitter-based feud during a very memorably, very Kanye hour of television.

Though making nice with Kimmel, West continued to make no apologies for the over-the-top, grandiose statements made during a recent BBC interview. "It's really something extremely fearless for someone in my position to do because most people bow down to TV," West said.

The rapper's priority in life -- in addition to his music, fashion, and art in general -- appear to be his family. "I could care less about any of these cameras in all honesty. I care about protecting my girls, protecting my baby, and protecting my ideas and dreams."

Kardashian's famous mom, meanwhile, is striking out on her own: Kris Jenner revealed to Us Weekly earlier this week that she and Bruce Jenner have amicably separated -- with no immediate divorce plans -- after 22 years of marriage. Kim's younger sister Khloe Kardashian was spotted reuniting with her own estranged spouse, Lamar Odom, for a visit to Kris' Calabasas, Calif. home on the day the split news broke.

Michigan Football: Coach?s Corner ? The Big Boys ? Where It All Starts

The central theme of Coach Mattison?s defensive philosophy and scheme is to stop the run at all costs. Progress has been made in the interior trenches the past two years and this year offers reasonable depth and versatility. The terms one-tech, three-tech, and five-tech have replaced more common terms of nose tackle, defensive tackle, and defensive end in discussions of interior types.

Quinton Washington is a red-shirt senior. His improvement was noticeable last year and it is a fair evaluation that Quinton was an average or slightly above average major college interior defensive lineman. It is just as clear that this year could also yield more improvement and increased contributions. Quinton only has one career sack and like the other members of Michigan?s interior defensive line had great difficulty getting to the quarterback. This led to the use of blitzburg tactics with mixed results.

Jibreel Black is also a senior. When he was recruited by Michigan the Wolverines were impressed with his quickness and potential for creating some mayhem. Jibreel can play the three and five technique positions and has been a valuable asset to the Wolverine defense. Still, Jibreel has only been a reserve or part-time starter during his career. Like the rest of the Michigan interior defense, Jibreel is working hard to contribute in 2013. Jibreel had three sacks in 2012. But again Coach Mattison has made it known that improvement in the front four pass rush is critical to the overall success of the Michigan defense.

Richard Ash has been through much in his career at Michigan. Unconfirmed reports of illness and injuries have been frequent. Richard is a reserve interior lineman. He is low to the ground and is currently in the 315-pound range. His long-term endurance may come into question, but 2-10 plays a game of relief in the middle may be Richard?s contribution. Richard may also be an extra space plugger on the goal-line unit. Ash is one of the Pahokee, Florida guys who have played hard, earned degrees, and represented Michigan well.

Ondre Pipkins was a highly ranked high school player when he signed with Michigan. He did not red-shirt but played in a reserve role. Ondre was reported by some as being a little out of shape. And like most true freshmen linemen (on both sides of the ball), Ondre found out that the young lion does not necessarily whip the older veteran. His off-season obviously focused on conditioning and technique. The current roster information lists Ondre at less than 310 pounds, down from last year. Ondre will play nose tackle this year and has great athletic ability and quickness for a 300 pounder. The coaching staff is waiting for Ondre to take charge and become the run stuffer and push up the middle force Michigan needs from a nose tackle.

Willie Henry is now a red-shirt freshman from Cleveland Glenville. He has size and quickness. Henry?s success will depend on strength and improvement of technique. Henry has good upside and it would make sense that he sees action at the 1 and 3 technique as a rotating reserve this year.

Michigan signed two talented interior defensive linemen last year, Maurice Hurst and Henry Poggi. Looking at the list of above available inside players, and adding in Chris Wormley, who may move between tackle and end assignments, it becomes logical to conclude both Poggi and Hurst will red-shirt. Poggi clearly needs strength and weight and Hurst will likely play nose-tackle, a position where there is now depth.

No doubt this unit has worked hard since the South Carolina game. Success here will lead to more success for the linebackers and defensive ends. The rush to the quarterback will continue, the question is can the front four take the lead?

Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez's Wedding: Intimate Photos and Details

When Zach Gilford emailed photographer Jonas Peterson to shoot his Dec. 29 wedding, the "Friday Night Lights" star first wanted to explain how he fell in love with his bride-to-be, "Lost" actress Kiele Sanchez.

"It's a very long email. I can't think of any specific thing, but the whole email is amazing," Peterson told ABC News. "[He said], 'I want to tell you the story of how I met the love of my life.'"

Gilford said that when he met Sanchez, they were both involved with other people, "but [he said], 'We knew we had to spend our lives together,'" said Peterson. "It's just a long story about him and her and personal loss -- and by the end I said, 'I'm doing this.'"

And shoot it he did. After getting to know the grounded couple, Peterson, who did not realize that they were celebrities until he met them, photographed the groom and his "stunning movie star" bride at their low-key wedding in Napa, Calif. (How low-key? At one point, the bride was curled up in flannel by a fire and smiling at her groom, who held a mason jar of moonshine.)

"It's amazing to meet people who treat me like family," he said. "I was honored and amazed. There's such a facade of actors and there was no facade with them at all. This was them being themselves, crying and all of that. This was them." The pictures capture a range emotions, from the couple's tearful vow exchange ("It was pretty special," Peterson said) to their joyful celebration afterward. However, some of the most smile-inducing shots are not of the newlyweds at all, but rather, of the couple's famous pals, Michelle Hurd, who acted with Sanchez on "The Glades" and her husband, "Raising Hope" star Garret Dillahunt, and Gilford's "Friday Night Lights" co-star Jesse Plemons (who played Landry Clarke).

"Oh man, that guy [Plemons] can play guitar!" Peterson added with a laugh. "He's in a band called Cowboy and Indian and they were good -- very good! [Gilford and Sanchez] are the most normal people in the world. It's so nice to see that celebrities can be completely normal and down-to-earth because, trust me, that never happens."

"They are the most in-love couple you'll ever see," he added. "It's really amazing. Zach said, 'This is the love of my life and I want you to come capture that.' And that's how it was, and that's how they act. To see them doing this thing was spectacular."
