IDC: Samsung extends lead in smartphones

(AP) ? Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphones, in part because its new Galaxy phones came out before Apple updated its iPhone, research group IDC said Friday.

Samsung's Galaxy S3 phones got good reviews when it was released late in the second quarter. In the U.S., the phones work with the faster fourth-generation, or 4G, cellular networks that major wireless companies have been building. The Galaxy's screen is larger than the iPhone's, while the Samsung phone is lighter and thinner.

An iPhone with 4G capabilities isn't expected until this fall. The current model, the iPhone 4S, came out in October, and sales typically drop several months after each release.

According to IDC, Samsung Electronics Co. shipped 50.2 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter and had a market share of 33 percent, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple Inc.'s fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. It sold 26 million iPhones in the April-June quarter.

IDC's report came out the same day Samsung reported another record-high quarterly profit, thanks to Galaxy sales. Robust sales of smartphones helped offset a slowdown in other consumer electronics businesses such as televisions and personal computers.

IDC said the big question is how well Samsung's phones will sell once the new iPhone comes out.

Analysts believe Samsung will achieve a record-high profit again in the third quarter when Galaxy S3 sales are expected to reach a peak, but sales are likely to drop or slow in the holiday quarter once Apple's new iPhone comes out.

Overall, phone manufacturers shipped 154 million smartphones in the second quarter, a 42 percent increase from 108 million a year earlier. That was slightly below IDC's forecast of 43 percent and was the slowest growth since the fourth quarter of 2009. At that rate, IDC said it would be tougher for Samsung and Apple to expand their market shares further. IDC said economic turmoil in Europe could put growth prospects at risk.

Including basic cellphones, vendors shipped 406 million units, up from 402 million a year earlier.

Samsung and Apple combined claimed nearly half of the smartphone market.

Nokia Corp. was No. 3 with a 6.6 percent market share, down from more than 15 percent a year ago. Nokia has had some success with its Lumia line, based on Microsoft's Windows system. The company is hoping for a boost once Microsoft releases a major upgrade to Windows in October, one designed with touch screens in mind.

HTC Corp. was fourth with 5.7 percent of the market, down from nearly 11 percent.

Chinese phone maker ZTE Corp. claimed the No. 5 spot for the first time, with a 5.2 percent market share, up from 1.8 percent a year earlier. Its lower-cost, entry-level smartphones have been popular in China and Latin America.

Question by lydia m: Why is Bulgaria a developing destination?
Bulgaria is considered to be one of the most rapidly advancing nations in Europe today.

I have to do a presentation explaining the key factors as to why this has happened e.g. political, economic, products and services and growth and leisure travel.

I?m struggling with the political and economic factors in particular and am finding the information quite difficult to find on the internet. Specific events and dates or links would be great or just a general idea so i know where to start!

Thank you :)

Commercial real estate, Champaign, Illinois: The Cost of Capital ...

BACKGROUND

As you may recall, on June 12, 2012, the Federal Reserve, OCC and FDIC proposed regulations implementing the Basel III capital accords. Basel III is an international agreement that updates capital and liquidity requirements for banks and other financial institutions. This 750 page regulation will impact the ability of non-financial businesses to raise capital and increase their costs of borrowing.
In a series of three separate but related proposals, the regulators proposed substantial revisions to the U.S. regulatory capital regimen for banking organizations that, if adopted, will have a significant impact on the entire U.S. banking industry. The U.S. rules are based on the core requirements of the 2011 international Basel III Accord and in significant part on the ?standardized approach? for the weighting and calculation of risk-based capital requirements under the 2004-2006 Basel II Accord. Importantly, the proposals will extend large parts of a regulatory capital regime that was originally intended only for large, internationally active banks to all U.S. banks and their holding companies, other than the smallest bank holding companies (generally, those with under $500 million in consolidated assets).
Commercial Real Estate

Most commercial loans will continue to be risk-weighted at 100 percent. The one significant change is for ?high volatility? commercial real estate loans (?HVCRE loans?), a subset of ADC loans. HVCRE loans will be risk-weighted at 150 percent. A lender may be able to return an ADC loan to the 100 percent risk weight through underwriting and the imposition of certain terms, as follows:

? The LTV ratio is less than or equal to the ?applicable maximum supervisory LTV ratio.?

? The borrower has contributed at least 15 percent of the appraised ?as completed? value of the property. The contribution may take the form of cash or unencumbered readily marketable assets, or the borrower may have paid development expenses out of pocket.

? The borrower has paid to the bank the capital charge that the bank will have to incur on the loan and has done so before the bank advances any funds.

? The contributed capital, which may eventually include capital generated internally by the project, must remain in place until the project is completed, the facility converts to permanent financing, or is sold or paid in full.

? Permanent financing by the bank must conform to the bank?s underwriting criteria for long-term commercial mortgage loans. An ADC loan to finance one- to four-family residential properties, however, may continue to be risk-weighted at 100 percent.

Residential Construction and Multifamily Loans

The current risk-based capital rules assign a risk weight of 50 percent to certain one-to-four family residential presold construction loans and to multifamily loans. A 100 percent risk weight applies to a presold construction loan if the purchase contract is cancelled. These risk weights are fixed by statute and cannot be changed. The proposed Standardized Approach, however, adds several new conditions to both kinds of loans in order to qualify for these risk weights.

Presold construction loans must meet several prerequisites designed to ensure that the property will, in fact, be sold on completion. Two notable new requirements are, first, that the builder incur at least the first 10 percent of the direct costs of construction (land, labor, and construction) before the builder may begin to draw down on the loan; and, second, that the loan amount may not exceed 80 percent of the sales price of the presold residence.

Loans secured by mortgages on multifamily properties will remain eligible for the 50 percent risk weight if several conditions are met. For example, a newly originated multifamily loan cannot be risk-weighted at 50 percent and must be weighted at 100 percent. If, after at least one year, the borrower has made all principal and interest payments on time, the loan will be eligible for the 50 percent risk weight, if other conditions are satisfied.

These conditions include the following: (i) the LTV ratio does not exceed 80 percent on a fixed rate loan or 75 percent on a loan where the rate may adjust; (ii) amortization of principal and interest must occur over a period of not more than 30 years, and the original maturity for repayment of principal is not less than seven years; and (iii) annual net operating income of the property must exceed annual debt service by 20 percent for a fixed-rate loan or 15 percent for a loan where the rate may vary.

Basel III Working Group

We have formed a staff level working group with various real estate groups in Washington. This group is meeting regularly to share information and develop a collective strategy on these proposed rules.

Syrian armored column closes in on Aleppo

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria sent thousands of troops surging towards Aleppo in the early hours of Wednesday, where its forces have been pounding rebel fighters from the air, engulfing the country's largest city in total warfare to put down a revolt.

Recent days have seen Syria's 16-month-old uprising transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and the slightly smaller capital, Damascus, where fighting exploded last week.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces have launched massive counter assaults in both cities. They appear to have beaten rebels back from neighborhoods in the capital and are turning towards Aleppo, a commercial hub in the north.

Syrian forces fired artillery and rocket barrages early on Wednesday at the northern Damascus suburb of al-Tel in an attempt to seize the town from rebels, causing mass panic and forcing hundreds of families to flee the area, residents and opposition activists said.

The 216th mechanized battalion headquartered near Tel started bombarding the town of about 100,000 people at 3:15 a.m. (0015 GMT) and initial reports indicated residential apartment blocks were being hit, they said.

"Military helicopters are flying now over the town. People were awakened by the sound of explosions and are running away," Rafe Alam, one of the activists, said by phone from a hill overlooking Tel. "Electricity and telephones have been cut off."

Opposition activists said thousands of troops had withdrawn with their tanks and armored vehicles from the strategic Jabal al-Zawiya highlands in Idlib province near the Turkish border and were headed towards Aleppo.

Rebels attacked the rear of the troops withdrawing from the region at the villages of Orom al-Joz and rami near the main Aleppo-Latakia road and at the village of al-Bara west of the Aleppo-Damascus highway, activist Abdelrahman Bakran said from the area.

In Aleppo, helicopters swirled overhead firing missiles throughout Tuesday, residents said. Rebels were battling government forces by the gates of the historic old city. Troops fired mortars and shells at rebels armed with rifles and machineguns.

"I heard at least 20 rockets fired, I think from helicopters, and also a lot of machinegun fire," a resident near one of the areas being shelled, who asked to be identified only by his first name Omar, said by telephone.

"Almost everyone has fled in panic, even my family. I have stayed to try to stop the looters; we hear they often come after an area is shelled."

Residents said fixed-wing jets had also flown over the city, followed by loud noises, although there were contradictory reports as to whether they had fired.

Some residents said they believed the planes had dropped bombs, but others said booming sounds could have been caused by supersonic jets breaking the sound barrier. A correspondent for Britain's BBC television said the jets had fired.

Assad's forces have occasionally launched air strikes from fixed-wing jets on other cities during the uprising, but tend to rely on helicopters for air strikes in urban areas.

The 16-month-old uprising has entered a new and far more violent phase in the past 10 days since rebels poured into Damascus in large numbers.

Last Wednesday, an explosion killed four members of Assad's closest circle inside a security headquarters, a blow that wiped out much of the top echelon of his military command structure and shattered the reputation for invulnerability that his family has held since his father seized power in a 1970 coup.

Western powers have been calling for Assad to be removed from power for many months, and now say they believe his days are numbered. But they fear that he will fight to the bitter end, raising the risk of sectarian warfare spreading across one of the world's most volatile regions.

Syria raised the alarm even further on Monday by confirming that it had chemical and biological weapons. In a statement that may have been intended to reassure the world but seemed to have the opposite effect, it said it would not use poison gas against rebels, only against external threats.

Assad's international protector Russia added its voice on Tuesday to those of Western countries warning him not to use chemical weapons. Western diplomats said Russia may have pressed Syria to make Monday's statement after the United States and Israel openly discussed their worries about chemical weapons.

U.S. President Barack Obama said the world would hold Assad and his entourage accountable "should they make the tragic mistake of using those (chemical) weapons".

Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, a member of Assad's inner circle who fled Syria this month, appeared on al Arabiya television in his first public comments since defecting. He called on troops to abandon the government.

"I address you ... as one of the Syrian Arab Army's sons who reject the criminal behavior of this corrupt regime. The honorable people in the military would not accept these crimes," he said on al-Arabiya television.

Tlas is a member of the Sunni Muslim majority, and his defection was seen as a sign that the Sunni establishment had abandoned Assad, a member of the Alawite minority sect.

MOSQUE ATTACK

Elsewhere in the country, activists said government troops and pro-Assad militia known as shabbiha had attacked a mosque in a village northwest of the city of Hama.

"Troops and shabbiha left the roadblock on the edge of Shariaa and crossed the main road and began firing automatic rifles on the worshippers as they were entering the mosque," activist Jamil al-Hamwi said by telephone from the area.

"We have confirmed the names for 15 bodies and it is estimated there is a similar number still to be collected from the streets," said Hamwi, who uses a pseudonym for security reasons. The account, like others from activists, could not be confirmed. Syria restricts access by international journalists.

At least nine people were killed in army shelling of al-Herak, a town south of Deraa, the cradle of the revolt against more than four decades of Assad family rule, activists said.

Video posted on the Internet showed the shattered bodies of a veiled woman and six children in colorful pyjamas, some of them very young. Four lay on one doctor's table.

TROOPS TIGHTEN GRIP ON CAPITAL

In Damascus, troops were trying to snuff out rebel resistance in several areas, including Barzeh, near the centre, and the southern districts of Hajar al-Aswad, Asali and Qadam.

Tanks prowled the streets of Midan, a neighborhood recaptured by the army from rebels on Friday.

Assad reshuffled his security team on Tuesday, according to a Lebanese security source. He said Ali Mamlouk had been named intelligence chief in place of Hisham Bekhtyar, one of four top Assad security aides killed in last week's blast.

Israel, which has publicly discussed military action to keep Syrian chemical arms or missiles out the hands of Assad's Lebanese militant allies Hezbollah, said there was no sign any such diversion had occurred.

"At the moment, the entire non-conventional weapons system is under the full control of the regime," a senior Israeli defense official, Amos Gilad, told Israel Radio.

The ferocity of the Syria conflict has only worsened, with 1,261 people killed since fighting intensified in Damascus on July 15, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles reports from anti-Assad activists.

That made last week by far the bloodiest in an uprising in which activists say at least 18,000 people have been killed.

Civilians are suffering, with three-quarters of medical facilities in Damascus closed and displaced people sheltering in schools or parks, the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said.

A UNHCR spokeswoman said that the number of displaced people within Syria had risen to about 1.5 million.

Affiliate Earning Potential in Online Gaming ? By Jeff Stevens

Savvy affiliate marketers are constantly clamoring for the ?next big thing? that will provide undiluted opportunities with massive potential.

In-browser online games and downloadable gaming apps are rapidly becoming just that: the next big thing in affiliate marketing.

While advertising in online gaming or through downloadable apps is nothing new, recent advances in technology and commissioning techniques have provided affiliates and app developers a largely unexplored medium that offers unlimited earning potential.

Why So Angry, Birds?
Gaming in a networked environment has existed for decades. However, only in the last few years has this vertical truly exploded.

Case in point: Rovio Entertainment Ltd, the creator of the Angry Birds franchise, announced that in 2011 the company?s total revenue was $106.3 million, driven mostly by their online Games and Advertising divisions.

With 2011 statistics such as 648 million game downloads and 200 million active users, it?s no surprise that they report 10 billion ad impressions every month. Again, consider the fact that this traffic is all being generated by closed-circuit game apps.

How Can Affiliates Benefit?
While online gaming has been around for years, earning potential associated with online games and gaming apps is relatively new. Thanks to recent advances in tracking technology and commissioning models, affiliates and game developers are now able to create revenue streams that never existed before.

Until recently, the predominant affiliate commissioning model in online gaming was on a cost-per-signup or cost-per-install (?CPI?) model, where affiliates were paid when the app or game was downloaded and installed.

While it?s the easiest to track and commission, the CPI model is limited to a singular action in which the affiliate receives a one-time payout for the up-front action.

Show Me the Rev Share!
As more and more games and apps are created, game developers are wisely turning to revenue-share payouts as a method to recruit and retain top gaming affiliates.

Treating the install/download as merely the starting point, affiliates who take part in a revenue-share gaming model continue to earn on any subsequent revenue-generating transactions that the player makes within the game.

While the technology that tracks subsequent conversions can be complex, the concept is simple. Upon successful game or app install, a relationship between player and affiliate is created. As the player continues through a lifecycle of a game performing such actions as buying in-game upgrades, making new level purchases, exchanging virtual currency, or engaging in any type of activity that generates new revenue, the affiliate reaps the benefits of ongoing commissions.

The player-engagement model is effective only if the proper tracking and commissioning infrastructure is in place to tie affiliates to these ongoing player conversions.

As this lucrative vertical continues to evolve, the most successful affiliate marketing programs will incorporate a combination of cost-per-install payouts along with ongoing player-engagement commissions.

Could affiliate marketing in the online gaming vertical be your next big thing?

Home Remodeling: How to Make You New Home Energy Efficient

All things change. People grow old, the seasons move on, and houses in time will begin to deteriorate. After more than twenty years of sheltering you and your family from the elements, that Gothic-style affair will start to look like something from a horror movie. But instead of merely repairing the affected areas, how about going for a complete house makeover? If you live in Cape Cod which has a beauty all-its-own and where occasional Victorian houses still stand, then you may want to have your home nicely remodeled. You can give your family a more comfortable living space and even reduce maintenance costs which will definitely add more value to your property should you decide to sell it.

Take your windows for example. If you've been suffering from high energy costs for many years, it may be time for you to invest in Energy Star-qualified windows. These windows minimize heat accumulation and help you cut down on energy consumption by at least 10 percent. As an added incentive, the government currently offers a maximum of $200 in tax credits for those who install Energy Star-qualified windows.

If your doors are crumbling from weather exposure or for any reason, you could go for new doors made from energy-saving material. Steel and fiberglass are some favored materials in use today due to their insulation capabilities. Like Energy Star windows, they too can help reduce household energy costs. Be sure to ask your manufacturer for your new door's U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Co-Efficient and Air Leakage--lower rates for all these, the better, and Condensation Resistance, the higher rate, the better.

Cape Cod home remodeling experts will also tell you if your roof needs a makeover. If you still have energy-saving in mind, opt for green roofs. These use vegetation to minimize heat and naturally absorb water in adverse weather. While green roofs have been used in Europe for quite awhile, the practice is still relatively new in the US. If you want to be progressive, getting a green roof is the way to go.

Don't forget your bathroom. Cape Cod remodeling contractors will advise you to go for solar water heating systems to cut down on energy costs all the more. You can also keep water consumption at a minimum by installing new water closets that use at least three liters to flush.

Are you scouting for a good Cape Cod home remodeling company? Check out yellowpages.com/cape-cod-ma/home-improvements. Don't wait another twenty years to remodel your house. Everyone deserves to live in style and comfort, and you're no exception.
