Researchers examine consequences of non-intervention for infectious disease in African great apes

ScienceDaily (Feb. 6, 2012) ? Infectious disease has joined poaching and habitat loss as a major threat to the survival of African great apes as they have become restricted to ever-smaller populations. Despite the work of dedicated conservationists, efforts to save our closest living relatives from ecological extinction are largely failing, and new scientific approaches are necessary to analyze major threats and find innovative solutions.

In response to this crisis, researchers at UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) have conducted a pioneering study that illustrates how severely disease threatens the long-term survival of wild gorillas and chimpanzees. It also explores the status of potential interventions that may help ensure their continued existence.

The article, "Consequences of Non-Intervention for Infectious Disease in African Great Apes," was recently published in the online journal PLoS ONE. The study indicates that mortality rates comparable to those recently reported for disease outbreaks in wild populations are not sustainable.

Sadie Ryan, the lead author, is assistant professor of ecology at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, N.Y.; and Walsh is a quantitative ecologist at the University of Cambridge, England.

Modeling demonstrated that recovery times to current population levels from a single disease outbreak, under very optimistic rates of recovery, would range from five years for a flu-like outbreak, to 131 years for an Ebola virus outbreak that killed 96 percent of the population, according to the study. Population resilience is central to assessing disease threat because gorillas and chimpanzees reproduce more slowly than virtually any other animal on earth, including humans.

"These disease mortality rates are particularly troubling, given the rising pathogen risk due to increasing human contact with wild apes, associated with their habituation for tourism, poaching, and the increase in population pressure around protected areas," said Ryan. "These small populations of great apes are the last vestiges of our closest relatives, so there is a huge emotional response when it comes to the question of intervention. Should we or can we wait, or should we use proactive intervention by vaccinating ahead of time?"

Both "naturally" occurring pathogens, such as Ebola and Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV), and respiratory pathogens transmitted from humans, such as the common cold and flu viruses, have been confirmed as important sources of mortality in wild gorillas and chimpanzees, and the rate of pathogen spillover from humans to African apes is known to be increasing. Although awareness of the threat has spread throughout the scientific community, interventions such as vaccination and treatment remain very controversial, the researchers noted.

Because of the scarcity of diagnostic data on exactly which pathogens infect apes and at what rates, Ryan and Walsh found it difficult to rigorously quantify how increased tourism would translate into increased disease pressure on ape populations. As a result, they assessed and compared potential future disease spillover risk -- in terms of vaccination rates among humans that may come into contact with wild apes, and the availability of vaccines against potentially threatening diseases -- with non-interventionist responses, such as limiting tourist access to the primates, community health programs, increased vigilance, and reactive veterinary intervention.

Based on their findings, Ryan and Walsh suggest that the great ape conservation community "pursue and promote treatment and vaccination as weapons in the arsenal for fighting the decline of African apes." They recommend that field studies on safe and efficient methods for delivering treatments and vaccines orally be conducted, along with evaluating the cost-effectiveness of all ape conservation strategies.

"We looked at the rates of vaccination in human populations both in host countries and potential tourists, and at the potential vaccines in development that could be used for great apes," Ryan said. "But we need to do more research when outbreaks occur by mobilizing the entire research community in order to better understand what is going on."

Gordy Grundy: The Last Portrait of Artist Mike Kelley

Respected film editor and documentary filmmaker Tyler Hubby is believed to be the last photographer to capture a portrait of international artist Mike Kelley on an assignment for Artillery magazine. The recent passing of the artist, musician and LA art hero has given a simple photo shoot a grave and life-changing significance.

Los Angeles-based Hubby has long been a fan and admirer of Mike Kelley. To produce a photo shoot, one has to prepare and plan, as well as anticipate for the serendipitous unknown. "I was really excited to photograph Mike Kelley," he said, "I had seen photographs of him dressed up as a janitor and in other unusual set-ups and thought that he would be up for something interesting. Not all artists are like that.?But Mike was totally game."

Mike Kelley is best remembered in a much-printed black and white photograph, a portrait of a young man. "I wanted to do a variation on the famous high school photo of him with the buttoned-up shirt and long hair," says Hubby, "When we did the session on December 7th?(2011) at his office in Highland Park he was completely into it, told us the story behind that photo and even brought a shirt for it." Hubby captured the contemporary and near half-century recreation.

The Hubby portrait graces the cover of the January issue of Artillery. Kelley looks somber, distorted and dislocated. Tyler Hubby remembers, "For the cover photograph, I was inches away from his face and he knew that the result would be very intense, and he was perfectly OK with that."

Hubby is sorry that a beautiful opportunity is now lost. He is making a feature length documentary about Tony Conrad, who was a mentor to Mike Kelley and artist Tony Oursler. Hubby asked Kelley if he would like to be interviewed in the film. Kelley agreed immediately. Hubby laments, "It never happened. I was waiting for the magazine to come out before scheduling it with his assistant."

The lanky photographer shrugs, "Kelley also seemed excited to see a video I had made in 1998 of Tony Conrad playing his signature loud violin drone in the space that he and Paul McCarthy had curated for the "Out of Actions" show at the Geffen Contemporary.?I sent him the link but I don't know if he ever saw it."

The death of Mike Kelley is a tragedy, a loss felt especially hard in the LA art world where Kelley is a hometown hero. This has given great significance to the January issue of Artillery magazine. As a longtime writer for Artillery, I have seen a magazine born on a kitchen table, grow and flourish in small, hard baby steps. Five years later, still sailing after stormy seas, the art magazine goes national. The new February-March 2012 issue hits the newsstands and all Barnes and Noble stores in the U.S.A. The editor Tulsa Kinney said she was proud and excited to have her hero Mike Kelley on the cover of this premiere issue. The excitement has now been etched with great sadness.

HAGERSTOWN, Maryland (AP) ? An Army officer ordered a court-martial for a low-ranking intelligence analyst charged in the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history.

Military District of Washington commander Maj. Gen. Michael Linnington on Friday referred all charges against Pfc. Bradley Manning to a general court-martial, the Army said in a statement.

The referral means Manning will stand trial for allegedly giving more than 700,000 secret U.S. documents and classified combat video to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks for publication.

The 24-year-old Crescent, Oklahoma, native faces 22 counts, including aiding the enemy. He could be imprisoned for life if convicted of that charge.

A judge who is yet to be appointed will set the trial date.

Manning's lead defense counsel, civilian attorney David Coombs, didn't immediately return a call Friday evening seeking comment on the decision.

Defense lawyers say Manning was clearly a troubled young soldier whom the Army should never have deployed to Iraq or given access to classified material while he was stationed there from late 2009 to mid-2010.

At a preliminary hearing in December, military prosecutors produced evidence that Manning downloaded and electronically transferred to WikiLeaks nearly half a million sensitive battlefield reports from Iraq and Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables, and video of a deadly 2007 Army helicopter attack that WikiLeaks shared with the world and dubbed "Collateral Murder."

Manning's lawyers countered that others had access to Manning's workplace computers. They say he was in emotional turmoil, partly because he was a gay soldier at a time when homosexuals were barred from serving openly in the U.S. armed forces. The defense also claims Manning's apparent disregard for security rules during stateside training and his increasingly violent outbursts after deployment were red flags that should have prevented him from having access to classified material. Manning's lawyers also contend that the material WikiLeaks published did little or no harm to national security.

In the December hearing at Fort Meade, Maryland, prosecutors also presented excerpts of online chats found on Manning's personal computer that allegedly document collaboration between him and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Federal prosecutors in northern Virginia are investigating Assange and others for allegedly facilitating the disclosures.

The Bradley Manning Support Group, which contends Manning heroically exposed war crimes, issued a statement calling his prosecution "fundamentally unjust."

"This administration owes all Americans an honest explanation for their extraordinary retaliation against Bradley Manning," said Jeff Paterson, one of the group's lead organizers.

Storm goes east after dumping on Colorado

DENVER?? The most powerful storm of the winter season pounded Colorado with up to 6 feet of snow in the Rocky Mountain foothills and forced the cancellation of more than 600 flights in Denver before heading east toward the central plains.

Blizzard conditions that hit the eastern Colorado plains, including 5-foot drifts in parts of Elbert County, began easing with forecasters advising of blowing snow early Saturday.

Light snow was falling intermittently in the Denver area early Saturday, but was expected to taper off by midday as the bulk of the storm moves out of the state, forecasters said

"We have a chance of snow in the foothills, but (Denver) metro will get just light flurries," National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Koopmeiners said Saturday.

He said all winter storm warnings have expired in Colorado, but the several counties in the state's eastern plains remain under a blowing snow advisory.

Europe tries to shield homeless in deadly freeze

Agate, a small town on the closed section of I-70, reported more than 2 feet of snow by Friday night and winds gusting to 25 mph. Other towns in eastern Colorado reported more than a foot of snow and similar wind speeds.

The snow was a welcome boost to several ski resorts that have suffered below-average snowfall this season. But while Echo Mountain and other resorts close to Denver celebrated up to 14 inches of new snow, the storm only dusted larger resorts, such as Vail, with a few inches in the central Colorado mountains.

"It's been fantastic," said Scott Gales, a spokesman for Echo Mountain about 25 miles west of Denver. "We only had about 26 or 27 inches this morning. Now we're over 40 and it's still snowing at the rate of an inch or two an hour."

Avalanche warnings
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center issued warnings for slopes east of the Continental Divide until noon Saturday, saying 2 feet or more of new snow could easily overrun the weak, existing snow pack.

In the foothills west of Denver, parts of I-70 were down to one lane, and chain laws were in effect throughout the mountains.

Most travelers apparently heeded storm and blizzard warnings. A few trucks were involved in crashes ? none serious ? on I-70, and Denver traffic was relatively smooth on Friday, said Gene Towne of the Colorado Department of Transportation.

"The accident situation hasn't really been that bad except the usual fender-benders we have during the evening commute," Towne said.

Some 600 flights were canceled at Denver International Airport, which averages 1,700 flights daily. Southwest Airlines, a key carrier at the airport, cancelled all of its flights for most of the day but resumed them late Friday.

Koopmeiners said snowfall across the Denver area ranged from 14-20 inches. Nearly four feet covered the Pinecliffe area, while there was 18 inches near Boulder and 14 inches in the capital city itself.

For many ranchers in drought-stressed eastern Colorado, the storm brought much-needed relief.

"Basically, this storm is going to be a real blessing because of the moisture," said Scott Johnson, who owns the Flying Diamond ranch near Kit Carson, about 130 miles southeast of Denver.

The Flying Diamond got 3 to 4 inches of snow, which was preceded by rain. Some of Johnson's other ranchland got a foot of snow.

Other ranchers' cattle were giving birth as the storm hit.

"Anything that was calving we moved in the barn," said Skylar Houston, a partner at the Aristocrat Angus Ranch about 35 miles north of Denver. Ranch hands had to feed other cattle because they couldn't graze through 6-inch snow, Houston said.

In Alaska, transportation officials urging motorists in the state's largest city to stay home over the weekend if they can so roads can be cleared as another winter storm blasted Anchorage.

The city was expected to get 6 to 10 inches of snow, with up to 15 inches on the city's upper hillside, said Dan Peterson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Anchorage.
