TIGAER-DESIGN.COM_.v5 ? Archive ? Drive ? Movie Review

movie reviewDue to its earlier release in the US I read and heard quite a lot about the movie and decided to see it now, since it finally reached europe. This review contains spoilers so be warned if you?re interested in seeing the film.

Pretty much all the reviews I saw mentioned that the movie has quite the 80s tone and feel going and I have to agree. All that made me not expecting too much since I?m not too much of an 80s fan at all. And I guess half the audience that was in the theater did not get the movie they expected. I, on the other hand, got the movie I expected and? really really liked it!

This movie is about a young man, we call him driver (Ryan Gosling), we don?t really learn much about. He?s just there, living his life. This life includes being a stuntman for movies what makes him quite an impressive driver. Beside that he?s working in a friends? (Bryan Cranston) car repair shop. This friend also has some questionable contacts that will come into play at a certain point in the movie. Now our driver tries to live his life between doing a few driver jobs for quick robs, work in the repair shop and being a stuntman. The driver character is a little hard to explain and leaves room for interpretation I think. We soon learn he definitely has a dark side. We, in fact, learn that right at the beginning. Right there we also see that he?s an exceptional driver with quite the instinct for certain situations. We never learn where he got that from. Which, at least for me, doesn?t hurt the character at all. It adds a mysterious feel to the character.

Our driver lives in an appartment building, next to a woman (Carey Mulligan) and her kid. Our driver meets them when shopping and recognizes her car broke down. For a moment we can see the thought process in his head. ?Do I help them or do I mind my own business?!?. He decides to help them. There we see that he also has a not so dark side. He?s helping her out and both kind of develop a connection. We can see that there is more happening and that?s because the movie gives enough space for the characters to play their parts. There isn?t too much dialogue happening but lots of things happen in the faces of the actors. Long cuts with a lot of room. No unnecessary explanations like so many movies do nowadays, because studios seem to think the audience is dumb and needs an explanation for everything. If you?re not mentally and emotional retarded then you?re able to understand what?s happing between these two people. And there we have our interpretation point again. Our driver is a pretty introverted character. He?s careful with whom he opens up to. His life depends on it. He even may have never loved someone before. The woman and the driver deepen their connection, in a very innocent and lovely way, further and now even the dumbest person on the planet can see that they really like each other. Even the kid seems to really like the driver. We also learn that the woman is actually married and her husband, in jail, is soon getting out and coming back. Which leaves driver in a not so easy to manage position. I found it very interesting to see how he gets through that.

The husband and the driver soon are confronted with each other. One day our driver comes home and sees the husband lying bloody on the floor. Driver helps him and asks what was going on. We learn that there happened some risky protection business in jail. The husband now has to pay off the dept he owes to the people that protected him in jail. Driver decides to help him and both go to a person that has the right job for them. The bad thing is that the job is not going as expected.

At the same time driver and his car repair shop friend land a deal with some mafia/organized crime guy to finance a stock car race endeavour. And that?s when it all comes together.

The money our driver and the husband are stealing is connected to the crime people who finance the race plans. It?s also bad that the husband of the woman gets shot and dies? which leads the bad guys to the woman and her kid? and of course to the driver who lives next door. All this was a long planned setup to upset the east coast mafia from whom the stolen money was.

To find out who set them up and how to resolve that complicated situation our driver really goes down the violent path. Somehow he knows exactly how to handle the people he?s dealing with. We still don?t know exactly why and it doesn?t matter. He wants to protect the woman and her kid? no matter the costs. The second half of the movie then is of course the one that gives us quite some bloody and disturbing scenes. Well placed and timed!

I realize that my description of the story doesn?t make much sense but believe me? the movie get it all together soooo damn well. It?s impressive.

This movie is a slow burn. The first half we have some wonderful character development. The movie takes its time with that. The cinematography, lighting, colours? the whole mood is almost mezmerizing. There are a lot of scenes where driver is just driving. We see his face and all the streetlights, all the different colours of that universe that Los Angeles can be, reflecting in his face. These scenes could easily be boring but somehow they give the viewer some room to understand what previously happened in the film. Like short intermissions. In the second half the movie starts to speed up a little. Our characters are confronted with certain situations and problems. These need to be solved as soon as possible.

The driver character sometimes has a psycho feel to him. But the way I see it he?s able to control that notion. He?s introverted and likes to stay by himself. This woman and her kid change his world. She could be his first true love and he?s willing to do everything necessary to know that she?s fine. He doesn?t expect anything in return. Kind of a classic movie hero.

The woman is a little torn apart. On the one side her husband and the other that guy who is just there and creates a lovely atmosphere everytime he?s around. I think she loves both of them and feels sorry. Carey Mulligan really does a beautiful job with that character. Again lots of quiet scenes that just speak for themself.

Bryan Cranston is also a great addition to the film. It?s cool to see him getting big A list roles now. It almost seems he?s getting bombarded with offers nowadays. Well? his ?Breaking Bad? performance surely helps him. In this film he is kind of the tragic figure that wasted its second chance.

The bad guys played by Albert Brooks (phenomenal) and Ron Perlman do a nice job too. It?s interesting to see Ron Perlman play such a small role. But he fills it and gives it some depth. Albert Brooks certainly isn?t playing his usual role here. It?s even hard to call him a bad guy character here. In the end he?s torn apart by the decisions he has to make. He just does what has to be done to resolve a situation.

This is not a ?Fast and Furious? or ?Transporter? movie. This isn?t a movie made for ?entertainment?. It?s a movie that requieres some investment and patience. If you?re willing to do that then you might see a movie that mentally lasts a little longer than just that one evening you saw it. This movie, for me, certainly did. I wrote this review over 5 days and I?m still fascinated by the film.

Is it a movie I could watch over and over again? I think no. Like I said. It?s not an entertainment film. You need to be in the mood for it. Or you need someone who you really want to show the film to. Make a nice evening and later talk about the film. And I?m sure it will be interesting to hear the perspective on the movie from another person.

5 Suggestions to Improve Your Writing Skills

Learning to improve your writing skills is not as difficult as it may seem. In most cases improvements can be made by applying simple adjustments to the writing process itself. Developing effective writing skills starts with ?removing? yourself from the actual process and first determining what it is you want to say. Each of us tend to get so involved in ?how? we write that we forget what it is we are trying to communicate. Often times this ends up resulting in writer?s block which then compounds the problem further making our efforts even more difficult. Remember the process is not difficult; it is your own mind that creates the complications!

Here are 5 suggestions you can put to use immediately to help you ?demystify? the writing process and make your efforts easier and more productive.

Determine Your Topic

Take the time to select a subject or topic of interest to you, and your readers of course.

If several come to mind than jot them down, provided you remember how to use a pen or pencil in this age of push button technology.

Determine Your Points

Now that you have determined what topic(s) you want to focus your efforts on, what points do you want to make and why? List these points out in an organized and easy to follow fashion for your viewers and by doing so you will also be giving the writing process some structure. This will make your efforts flow more easily! Knowing the ?why? behind what you are composing is useful for writing your introduction and a great way to let readers know what to expect. This is a very effective writing tip that will allow you to get past the first paragraph which is typically the hardest to compose.

Find the Words

Often the words you are looking for come to you quicker when you speak your thoughts out loud. Take a particular point you are trying to make but having difficulty putting into words and than take a walk to ?nail? down the way you want to say it. Sitting at a keyboard and ?pressing? for the right words leaves the door ?open? to increased frustration and writer?s block.

Speak as if you are conversing with a friend and do not write to impress but to be understood!

Just Write

Settle down and start composing only after thoughts start to flow freely through your mind. Do not concern yourself with spelling or grammar at this point but instead focus only on recording your thoughts. By doing this you will find the writing process flows much more smoothly and rapidly.

Edit Your Work

Remember when you wanted to take the time to correct your spelling and check your grammar, well now is your chance. Proofread what you have composed and get rid of needless words or phrases. Check to see if it sounds right and when you are satisfied, hit the spell check tab, make any corrections necessary, and congratulate yourself on a job well done!

Learning to improve your writing abilities starts with making a conscious effort to not overly complicate what you are trying to do. Simply put, the writing process should involve nothing more than you sharing a conversation with others. Allowing your thoughts to flow freely as you record them in an uninterrupted fashion is what you want to achieve and how to develop more effective writing skills. The 5 suggestions offered above serve to help simplify your approach while avoiding writer?s block which normally results the longer your progress continues to be delayed. Remember composing anything is not really all that difficult unless you allow your own mind to make it that way. Just say what you want and write what you say!

(AP) ? U.S. retailers are reporting mixed sales results for January in a sign that American shoppers are continuing to be cautious about when and where they spend their money in the shaky economy.

Of the 12 merchants reporting monthly sales this week, the number of those who beat estimates and those who missed expectations were even, according to a Thursday morning count by Thomson Reuters.

Costco Wholesale Corp. and Target Corp. were among those reporting sales gains that were above Wall Street expectations, while Macy's Inc. and Dillard's Inc. posted figures that were below analysts' estimates.

The figures are based on revenue at stores opened at least a year and are considered a key indicator of a retailer's health.

Latest Kaleidescape tentative judgement could mean the end of untethered disc servers

KaleidescapeThe thing about the American civil court system is you can almost never stop looking over your shoulder, even when you thought you won. Things get appealed and what was a favorable ruling can become your worst nightmare five years later. That's what the folks at Kaleidescape are facing if the latest tentative judgement in its case vs the DVD Copy Control Association, which licenses DVD's defunct copy protection, CSS. Last time around Kaleidescape was on the other side of the ruling with the Judge agreeing that there was no violation of any terms of service. This time around? Not so much. It would mean a shift in legal DVD servers, but we'd imagine Blu-ray takes up most of the market by now anyway. Currently Kaleidescape's Blu-ray products authenticate the disc is in the vault before playing, and its CEO has testified modifications could be made to the DVD products within a few months. So with Managed Copy being DOA and UltraViolet being anything but disappointing to anyone, days without keeping track of discs to watch the movies you own seems like a fairy tale -- legally anyways.

Angelic "Steve Jobs" loves Android in Taiwan TV ad (Reuters)

TAIPEI (Reuters) ? He may have derided Android devices in real life but in the afterlife Apple Inc founder Steve Jobs is glad he can use one -- or at least that's the story a Jobs look-alike tells in a recent TV commercial for a Taiwanese electronics company's new product.

In the ad, Taiwanese comedian and impersonator Ah-Ken, dressed in Jobs' trademark black turtle neck sweater and blue jeans and sporting white angel's wings and a halo, extols the virtues of Action Electronics Co.'s combined tablet PC and multi-language dictionary, which runs on Google Inc's Android.

"Introducing the new generation of the pad," says the "Jobs" character, whipping the Action Pad out of his back jeans pocket, wings flapping as he shows off the dictionary functions on a giant screen behind a darkened stage furnished with a sofa and small table.

"Thank God I finally get to play other tablets," the character adds in the 20-second commercial's final scene, a broad grin on his face as he taps away on the device on the sofa. The ad is subtitled in English throughout, a nod to the device's dictionary function.

Jobs, who died in October 2011, famously referred to Android as "shit," according to his biography, and was quoted in the book as saying he was going to "destroy" Android and was prepared to go to "thermonuclear war" over the product.

"Steve Jobs always promoted things that were good for people, Apple products, so his image can also promote other things that are good," said Chelsea Chen, a spokeswoman for Action Electronics, a maker of electronic gadgets including portable DVD players and Internet devices.

The commercial does not use Jobs' name or refer to him or Apple in any way, but has drawn some sharp reactions on YouTube,

with some branding it distasteful and disgusting and one even calling for a boycott of the company. The video is at: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeXXwQrQiPE&feature=youtu.be)

Chen didn't see any adverse reaction from Apple.

"It's just an impersonator, not Jobs," she said.

"We have no choice but to use Android, we can't use iOS," she added, referring to Apple's mobile device operating system.

It's not the first time Jobs' image has been used in Taiwan to promote products, a measure of his fame in the wired, tech-exporting island whose companies make most of Apple's products. Last year a drinks company had a Jobs look-alike promoting a green tea drink.

Jobs has also been featured by Taiwanese satirical news video maker Next Media Animation, which once portrayed him knocking the helmet off "Darth Vader" Bill Gates of Microsoft with a light saber and then wearing it himself and ruling the tech universe from an office in a Death Star.

(This version corrects year of Jobs' death in fifth paragraph)

Global food prices easing, volatility still high: World Bank (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Global food prices are set to decline further in 2012 as a weaker world economy dampens consumer demand while food supplies rise, the World Bank said on Tuesday, warning that a possible rise in oil prices could reverse the trend.

The World Bank said prices have declined steadily but volatility has increased, including among staples like wheat, maize and rice. In some countries, domestic food prices are higher than levels in 2010, keeping pressure on poor households that spend the bulk of their income on food.

The World Bank increased its monitoring of global food prices in 2009 during a food and energy price crisis that hit food-importing countries the hardest and highlighted the chronic underinvestment in agriculture in developing countries.

The World Bank said its 2011 annual food price index shows prices are still 24 percent higher than in 2010 despite some decline. Global prices fell 8 percent in the three months from September to December 2011, ending the year 7 percent below December 2010 levels.

"The worst food price increases may be over but we must remain vigilant," said Otaviano Canuto, the World Bank Group's vice president for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management. "Prices of certain foods remain dangerously high in many countries, leaving millions of people at risk of malnutrition and hunger."

The Bank warned, however, that the steady decline in global food prices could be halted if weather patterns change, or if world oil prices rise, pushing up price volatility and demand for biofuels.

Price volatility adds uncertainty and keeps prices high because farmers are unsure how to price their products.

The World Bank's sister organization, the International Monetary Fund, warned last week that global crude oil prices could rise as much as 30 percent if Iran halts exports as a result of U.S. and European Union sanctions.

Iran has threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz shipping route, which handles 20 percent of oil traded globally.
